How to Choose a Coffee Table to Go with Your Sofa
A coffee table is a must-have piece of furniture for any living room—whether it’s a small one in an apartment building or a spacious living room in a townhouse or single-family home. It’s on the coffee table that we set down remote controls, magazines, and various living room trinkets. This is where we set down a cup of coffee or tea to relax in peace after coming home from work. Sometimes we even rest our tired legs on it (of course, when the kids aren’t looking). How do you choose the perfect coffee table? Read our guide!
Article at a Glance
A coffee table should be sized appropriately for the living room in which it is placed. In a spacious living room, you can opt for a larger table, while in a smaller room, a small table is a better choice so it doesn’t overwhelm the space.
It’s essential to maintain a minimum distance of 45 cm between the edge of the coffee table and the sofa—this ensures that both the coffee table and the sofa can be used comfortably.
A rectangular coffee table remains the most popular choice for a sofa. Why? Because it’s versatile and fits into most living rooms.
The easiest to use on a daily basis is a coffee table made of high-quality furniture-grade board—it’s scratch-resistant and easy to keep clean.
Modern, loft-style, or traditional; glass, wood-colored, or white—the selection of coffee tables is nearly endless, and there’s something for everyone.
The Perfect Coffee Table for the Sofa
The perfect coffee table is one that fits your interior, your family’s lifestyle, and that you simply love. Today, the selection of coffee tables is vast, in terms of shapes, colors, and styles. Rectangular coffee tables are the most popular—they make up the majority of what furniture stores offer. Square and round coffee tables are also in high demand. Triangular coffee tables are also appearing more and more frequently in furniture stores’ selections, and they work great in modern interior designs.
And what about colors and designs? They come in all shapes and sizes. Currently, the most fashionable tables are those in the loft and industrial styles, made entirely or partially of metal or imitation metal. Their defining feature is their unique legs, shaped like geometric supports or slender, low legs. A trend that’s just emerging but is already very noticeable is side tables with tops made of faux marble, most often black and white. Also very interesting are sofa side tables consisting of two or even three units. Each one is a different size, and they can be neatly stacked one under the other; when more space is needed, they can be pulled apart to create a truly large tabletop area. Also worth noting are the extremely trendy, small metal side tables that resemble baskets in appearance. Their interior is perfect for storage, such as newspapers or books.
And let’s not forget about fans of classic style. A white coffee table is a great choice for those who prefer cozy, timeless interiors. But that’s not all. White coffee tables, especially glossy ones, also work well in living rooms decorated in a glamorous style. On the other hand, coffee tables that combine white with warm wood accents will work well in living rooms designed with a cozy Provençal feel.
Coffee tables with wheels attached to the legs are also very practical. Thanks to these wheels, the table becomes a mobile piece of furniture that can easily be moved around. Such a table is especially useful next to sofas that are unfolded every day for sleeping.
How do you choose the right height for a coffee table to go with your sofa?
The size and height of a coffee table are important factors to consider when choosing this piece of furniture. You need to match its size to the dimensions of the room and the other furniture in the living room, as well as to the needs of everyone in the household. So what dimensions should a sofa table have? Let’s start with the height—it’s most comfortable when the tabletop is roughly at seat height, meaning the entire table is about 45–50 cm tall. Although, of course, there are those who prefer lower or slightly taller tables. However, a 45–50 cm height for a sofa table is the standard, and it can be difficult to find one that’s significantly taller or shorter. A cool and very practical option (though unfortunately rare) is a height-adjustable coffee table. This allows you to set the table to the perfect height for you and even adjust it throughout the day depending on your current needs.

Coffee table—what material should it be made of?
Let’s also take a look at the material the coffee table is made of. These days, most coffee tables are made entirely or partially from furniture-grade board—either laminated or MDF. Both materials are highly resistant to stains, temperature fluctuations, and damage. They are very easy to keep clean. One drawback is that any spilled liquids should be wiped up quickly; otherwise, bulges may form.
Wooden coffee tables also enjoy enduring popularity. They offer unique advantages—durability, a timeless style, and versatility— a wooden coffee table fits into any interior design, whether modern or traditional. However, they require proper care—cleaning with specialized products, oiling, and conditioning. Only then can you fully appreciate the beauty of a wooden coffee table.
Coffee table tops are also made of glass. While this isn’t the hottest trend of recent seasons, it’s still popular. A major drawback of glass coffee tables (and all glass furniture) is the need to clean the glass surfaces frequently.
And the latest hot and fresh trend—coffee table tops made from a variety of materials—such as wood and cured resin, or dark wood-colored laminate and glass. It looks very original, but will it catch on? We’ll have to wait and see.
What kind of coffee table goes with a corner sofa?
It all depends on the type of corner sofa and its size. It’s very easy to find a coffee table that matches an L-shaped sofa, since size restrictions apply to only one side. We can basically choose a piece of furniture of any size, as long as the dimensions of our living room allow for it, of course. In this case, a rectangular, square, or round coffee table will work perfectly.
It’s a bit more challenging to match a coffee table to a U-shaped corner sofa, since in this case we’re limited by three sides. The table must fit within the open space between the sides of the corner sofa, and its size must not compromise comfort. For your own comfort, it’s best to place the table about 45 cm away from each edge of the sofa—this ensures you can sit comfortably next to it and walk past it easily. That’s why the shape of the corner sofa table can be anything you like; the only limitation is its dimensions. If the U-shaped corner sofa is small, a small coffee table will also work well with it. A folding coffee table is also a great choice in this arrangement, as it can be expanded when needed.
What should you look for when choosing a coffee table to go with your sofa?
There are often too many things on the coffee table, especially if there are small children in the house. Coloring books, crayons, and other kids’ stuff—I think every adult gets annoyed by the number of little kids’ items in the living room. Not to mention remote controls, magazines, and coasters—they’re supposed to go on the coffee table, but it’s nicer when they’re not just lying around on top of it. If you’re familiar with this problem, the perfect solution for you is a coffee table with extra storage space in the form of a shelf under the tabletop, a practical compartment, and/or a drawer. All of these features can be found in a single table, or you can opt for a sofa table with just a drawer or just a shelf. A huge advantage of such storage solutions is the ability to quickly and easily tuck away various items, keeping the tabletop free for other pleasures.
